5/21/2023 0 Comments Ransom by david maloufDressed simply and in a cart pulled by a mule, an old man sets off for the Greek camp. There must be a way, he thinks, of reclaiming the body - of pitting compromise against heroics, new ways against the old, and of forcing the hand of fate. From the walls of Troy, King Priam watches the body of his son, Hector, being dragged behind Achilles’ chariot. In this exquisite gem of a novel, Achilles is maddened by grief at the death of his friend Patroclus. ‘A work of immediacy, humanity and tenderness.’ Philip Parker, Financial Timesĭavid Malouf shines new light on Homer’s Iliad, adding twists and reflections, as well as flashes of earthy humour, to surprise and enchant. ‘a masterpiece’ Alberto Manguel, Australian Literary Review subtle and extremely moving.’ Daniel Mendelsohn, New Yorker ‘Australia’s finest writer’ Miriam Cosic, The Australian Malouf's fable engraves the epic themes of the Trojan war onto a perfect miniature. 5/21/2023 0 Comments Disgruntled by asali solomonThe young daughter of Black nationalist parents, Kenya is forced to navigate her identity in a predominately white suburban school, the dramatic break up of her family, and some distinctly Philadelphia-complicated situations and tragedies. This year her novel Disgruntled, a coming-of-age tale set in Philadelphia in the late eighties and early nineties, has recieved even more attention for its humorous and compassionate portrayl of the complex life of its protaganist, Kenya Curtis. The West Philadelphia native and Haverford College professor's first book, Get Down, a collection of short stories, garnered much acclaim when it was published in 2008. And it can get much more detailed after a Google search. She was subtle in her answers, but the truth tends to find its way through. The Jenga block tower had not even crashed down once before I realized something along the lines of Oh, Asali is a real writer.įorgive my unfinished novelist identity issue. But really, I should've known better- my friend is a bit of a rock star who also happens to be married to one. I remember thinking something mildly sarcastic along the lines of Ah, yes, all writers should meet. The mutal friend, a doctor, had previously mentioned to me that her friend, Asali, was also a writer and that we should meet. Because we'd both been invited to a small, impromptu holiday gathering, I first met Asali Solomon about a year ago over drinks and a game of Jenga. 5/21/2023 0 Comments Dan ariely bookUltimately, the book provides a kind of x-ray vision into our own minds, making it possible to pierce the veil of illusions that clouds our thoughts and to think clearly for perhaps the first time. Chabris and Simons explain why we succumb to these everyday illusions and what we can do to inoculate ourselves against their effects. The Invisible Gorilla reveals the myriad ways that our intuitions can deceive us, but it’s much more than a catalog of human failings. And as a society, we spend billions on devices to train our brains because we’re continually tempted by the lure of quick fixes and effortless self-improvement. We’re sure we know where we were on 9/11, falsely believing that vivid memories are seared into our minds with perfect fidelity. We write traffic laws and build criminal cases on the assumption that people will notice when something unusual happens right in front of them. We think we see ourselves and the world as they really are, but we’re actually missing a whole lot.Īgain and again, we think we experience and understand the world as it is, but our thoughts are beset by everyday illusions. In The Invisible Gorilla, Christopher Chabris and Daniel Simons, creators of one of psychology’s most famous experiments, use remarkable stories and counterintuitive scientific findings to demonstrate an important truth: Our minds don’t work the way we think they do. Reading this book will make you less sure of yourself-and that’s a good thing. 5/21/2023 0 Comments The Baby Matrix by Laura CarrollCarroll does not specifically say anything about couples where one wants children and the other is unable or unwilling to have them. Will this book help you if you’re in a childless-by-marriage situation? I don’t know. Want to know what sociology texts tell college students about marriage and children? It’s here. Want to know how many childless women there are in Finland? It’s here. Maybe, maybe not, but there is so much information here. People should be rewarded for not having kids instead of getting tax breaks for having them. Furthermore, she says that parenting should be a privilege for which people must prove they are qualified. Carroll challenges common assumptions such as the idea that people need to have children to be fulfilled, mature, happy, and cared for in their old age. Although I disagree with some of her points, I have to admire this well-written and deeply researched book that I will keep handy as a reference from now on. We don’t all need to have children, especially in a world suffering from overpopulation, she says. Laura Carroll, who previously published Families of Two, about couples living happily childfree, has put together an absolute encyclopedia about why the “pronatalist” viewpoint that tells us that everyone should have children is no longer valid. The Baby Matrix: Why Freeing Our Minds from Outmoded Thinking About Parenthood & Reproduction Will Create a BetterWorldby Laura Carroll, Live True Books, 2012. Taking Blackbriar Keep is the first step in that plan, and–by the three gods–it won’t be the last. Ever since his father’s death, the fearsome warrior they call Torch has been consumed by his quest for revenge. Now, with her father’s life at stake, Calista must nurse the brigand back to health, and the strangest thing happens: She finds herself fascinated by his tautly muscled body, and enthralled by his hotly whispered demands. She even manages to sink a poison-tipped arrow into their commander, who survives long enough to conquer the Keep and claim Calista for his own. Though she is intended for the king, Calista Thorne picks up a crossbow to defend her ancestral home, Blackbriar Keep, from a gang of landless knights. Brief Summary of Book: Destined for a King (The Bastard Brotherhood, #1) by Ashlyn Macnamara 5/20/2023 0 Comments My dearest darkestFinch comes across as sincere but sheltered, and her arc follows the familiar track of self-discovery through tragedy, as she struggles with guilt over her parents' death and her culpability in unleashing a murderous god. Exaggerated imagery and shifting perspectives, along with the over-the-top supernatural elements, call back to '90s teen horror movies à la The Craft and The Faculty. But when you make a deal with the devil-or in this case, Nerosi the Horned Queen, a soul-sucking god driven by an insatiable hunger to consume worlds-the bargain always comes at a cost. While Finch grapples with coming out (she wasn't sure she was gay but she's definitely attracted to Selena) and new school dynamics, a sinister force hidden in the sea caves is drawing strength from students, promising to fulfill their deepest desires. Despite her grief, Finch still ends up attending Ulalume, and the shy girl promptly finds her place among the cool kids, including part-time mean girl Selena for whom she develops an obvious crush. For Finch Chamberlin getting into Ulalume Academy means everything, but a campus visit to Rainwater's prestigious boarding school ends with a freak accident that leaves her parents dead. Model for many characters in his books: characters who relentlessly and thoughtlessly sought personal gain without any consideration for who or what they destroyed in the process. As he said later, "What I most wanted was to belong to something" ( Audubon). Reading and writing gave him a hold on the world. Stegner purposely set out to be unlike his father by becoming bookish. George Stegner's life ended violently when he killed a woman he was with and then took his own life. The family finally settled in Saskatchewan, Canada, although Stegner's father alternated between living with his wife and two sons to roaming the frontier, in search of his ultimate opportunity. Most of his childhood was spent moving from place to place as his father, George Stegner, a restless schemer, searched for a way to get rich quick. Wallace Stegner was born on February 18, 1909, in the rural community of Lake Mills, Iowa. Although sometimes categorized as merely a "western writer," Wallace Stegner (1909-1993) was more than that: he wrote 30 books, both fiction and nonfiction, served as a mentor to many young writers, and worked in support of conservation issues throughout his lifetime. 5/20/2023 0 Comments Ali monica brick laneOr click here to read other people’s reviews of Brick Lane on Amazon. It’s quite a big leap, and didn’t convince me totally. Then, when read analysis of Banesa Chanu Nazneen ’s husband. Upon seeing infant Nazneen in the arms of Rupban, she declares the baby dead. Unfortunately some of the things she does when she starts to take action are not very believable, like joining an activist group and having an affair with its organiser. Brick Lane Characters Banesa Banesa The midwife to Gouripur, she claims to be 120 years old at the time of Nazneen ’s birth. This is consistent with the character, but doesn’t make for a great story until much later in the book where she starts to take action. Part of the difficulty of the book lies in the fact that for much of it, Nazneen is so accepting of her fate. It was an interesting depiction of a woman who moves to England in an arranged marriage and gradually, over decades, changes from someone who accepts her fate to someone who takes charge of it. I think maybe this is one of those cases where the hype was so massive that the reality is bound to disappoint. The book as a whole is not simplistic, but the ending made it seem that way. Brick Lane Summary Next Chapter 1 Brick Lane by Monica Ali begins in the village of Gouripur in rural Bangladesh, where Rupban is going into labor two months early with the birth of her eldest daughter, Nazneen. Hated the ending – don’t worry, I won’t give it away, but the last line just sounded so corny I was quite shocked. I enjoyed the story and it was well-written, but to me nothing special. 5/20/2023 0 Comments My one and only by kristan higgins#kristanhiggins #womensfiction #booktok #packupthemoon #sadbooks #bookrecommendations #bookrecs #bookworm #books #bookish #bookish #booklover #bookworm #bookclub #books #sadromancebooks #summerread #bookreview it over the top to crash your ex-husband’s wedding dressed like the angel of death? | Asking for a friend… | Only Kristan Higgins could make me giggle, cringe, growl in frustration, and shed both happy *and* sad tears all in one book. #kristanhiggins #womensfiction #booktok #packupthemoon #sadbooks #bookrecommendations #bookrecs #bookworm #books #bookish #bookish #booklover #bookworm #bookclub #books #sadromancebooks #summerread #bookreview लाइक,Sara | HarlequinJunkie □ का TikTok वीडियो: "#outoftheclearbluesky Only Kristan Higgins could make me giggle, cringe, growl in frustration & shed both happy *and* sad tears all in one book.
